Mindfully Connected Vacations

When it comes to vacations, we all know that going on a vacation with kids is not a vacation at all!  Its usually more work!  I have had some vacations where I feel stress and overwhelmed and find my self not enjoying this precious time with my family. 

 

However, I love to travel and I am learning to make some changes and really build connections when we are away and traveling!  Here are the 3 things that I am working on:

 

 

1. Saying YES more!  Yep, thats right.  I allow myself to say yes to more requests from my kids.  Play a game with me? Yes!  Let's go in that store! Yes! Can I get dessert, again? Yes!  I found myself saying no to things that I didn't have a really good reason for saying no to.  Or I focused on avoiding mess or risk or something else that might be inconvenient in that moment, but ultimately is something that will bring joy to my children and myself! I was missing moments because I was playing everything so safe!  So I threw caution to the wind and started saying yes more! (now don't be fooled, I still have plenty of no's in me when the time is right.)  I play more with my kids.  I have new experiences with them.  I see the shock and utter excitement in their eyes when I say yes to something I used to say no to.  I have to credit the book Yes Day! because it was what sparked this concept! 

 

2. Letting go of expectations.  Sometimes I get so excited to do things with my family that I try to cram so much into one experience that we all get exhausted and grumpy and we stop enjoying ourselves and each other.  And then I get upset that my expectations weren't met.  In reality, we are having a great time in whatever we do, or don't do.  So I've started going with the flow more.  Make some plans and then be prepared to toss whatever doesn't work!  Can't get to everything? Totally fine!  Lets go watch a movie and rest in the RV!  Or let's stop running around and play in the pool!  It's ok! I've learned that sometimes the best adventures are the unplanned ones.

 

3. Meditating as often as I can.  I try not to say every day, because I sometimes miss a day here and there, but for me to remain connected with my girls, I know that it is incredibly important for me to slow myself down and connect with myself everyday - even for a few short minutes. I usually try to get in at least 10 minutes first thing in the morning before everyone gets up.  I know that when I take this little bit of time for myself, I can connect better with my kids throughout the day!
